Shooting action sequences is something you’re more likely to do at a sporting event or graduation ceremony or photographing birds in your backyard. However, I believe shooting action sequences has a place in wedding and engagement photography as well.

I’m not sure when I began doing this but it seems at every wedding, engagement, or lifestyle portrait session I shoot one action sequence. Maybe it goes back to my days of film making or my need to storyboard a photography session or my fondness for reading comic books as a kid. But regardless the reason, I still enjoy piecing the sequence together. And truth be told, I probably enjoy shooting the sequence as much, if not more than, my clients enjoying remembering them.

As with any technique or trend, a little is better than a lot. Thus for me the magic number is one – one short action sequence consisting of between three and five photographs. Most often I use the action sequence images to create a single collage photograph.

However, other times I might actually use the action sequences photographs as single stand-alone images in the collection.
